On this Portland Pride weekend, author Andrea Carlisle will take us on a journey through some of this history of LGBTQ literature. Andrea will explore the pathway queer lit has taken — from volumes featuring same sex love that had to be tucked away under lock and key to lengthy online lists, available to millions, of favorite novels featuring LGBTQ characters. Not only shifts in governmental policies led to this enormous shift in acceptance, but novelists with determination and vision have contributed greatly as well. Who were these writers, who are they, and what are the books that have lit the way?
Andrea Carlisle is the author of a book of essays on women and aging,There Was an Old Woman: Reflections on These Strange, Surprising, Shining Years (Oregon State University Press, 2023). This year, OSU Press published a 40th Anniversary Edition of her fictional tales, The Riverhouse Stories, about the adventures of two women who purchase an old houseboat on an Oregon river.
